Default Advice on a scooter please?

My father-in-law is looking to get a 'ped, and has seen one he likes. It's fairly new, has low miles, and on the face of it, appears to be a good price. It has been used as a marhsalls pit bike... Is this likely to be the reason it is cheaper? What should we/he be looking out for? Is it likely to have been abused?

Yes, started lots, never allowed to warm up and ragged by everyone...

Hmm... It's a Yamaha liquid cooled 4 stroke, there's a choice of a few available, all BSB marshall pit bikes, two listed without mileage, one with about 200 and one with about 300 miles on the clocks. I'm hoping the one's with no miles listed, are because they've hardly any on them.

Question is, while as FD says, they'll have been run without the chance to warm, how much premature wear is likely to have been caused?

Long term, whatever he buys will be well looked after and not abused, but don't want to recommend something that will cause no end of trouble.

To be honest, providing the bike looks ok, starts and sounds ok, and its cheap enough it should be ok, being a 4 stroke would make it more resilient to being cold started and ridden, IMHO

We're going to go have a look-see tomorrow, if they sound ok, can't see that they'll be that bad. Surely more reliable than something that's be derestricted and had a few thousand put on at the limits of the machines capablity?

He's pretty flexible with style. These are Yamaha Giggle,

others he's looked at were more along the lines of the Yamaha Aerox and Neo.

He's looked at various different peds, but would like to stick to Honda or Yamaha for build. He want's 50cc so he doesn't have to mess about with CBT and L-plate stuff. Speed isn't a key issue, as most roads will be 30 - it's for town commuting, but timing is an issue, as his necessity for one is near imminent.
