Default How does your job make you feel?

This time last year, I really really hated being involved in chemistry research. I felt beaten down and worthless, pathetic and stupid.

One year on, 6 months into my new PhD at kingston university...I feel 100 feet tall and that no-one and no-thing can bring me down. Problems are dealt with, rather than shy'd away from. Consulting with my friends is a regular occurence. Giving talks to large numbers of people is fun, not daunting. I now feel proud of what I do, and I wake up every day with motivation and desire to go work in the lab.

How does your job make you feel about yourself?

Matt

Let's just say, they've taken the opportunities provided by the economic situation to increase our standby rota and reduce our benefits. So there's a lot of us just biding our time and waiting for the economy to pick up.

Fortunately, I'm not defined by my work, but it must be awful for the live-to-work types.

I hate it, I have a seething anger for places like where I work, sloping shoulders and back stabbing is only the surface,

Roll on the economy picking up and the government spending some more debt.

Just 'cos some people have a job which defines one part of who they are, that doesn't mean those people don't have other parts of their lives that also define them.

It's not necessarily awful for live-to-work types either, if they enjoy what they do and they get reward from it, they might be quite happy with that arrangement. Some are lucky enough to have found a job which allows them to make a living out of a hobby, and they work every hour that got sends because that's what they love to do. Others work in vocational jobs, and may not want to work every hour, but which they get a lot of reward from the hours they do put in.

How many folk on here would love a job as a courier if only it paid a bit better, or would like a job restoring or rebuilding dead motorcycles?

Most folk who say somebody else is a "workaholic" are just jealous that they don't get the same out of their own jobs, and would love to have a job they enjoyed.

at the moment i have 2 jobs and i can choose between both.
both jobs are totally different.
i have been doing HGV driving, basically trunking trailers back and forth and i hate it but the money is ok.
my other job is a carpenter but unfortunately work is up and down. i actually love the job and wish i could cover every day with it. i also do general building work which i dont mind at all.
there is the right job out there for everyone, its just making that decision to jump into what you think you might like
can always jump out again and try something else.

there is no way i could work with the same people all day, doing the same thing day in day out but some people like it.

Some days I get frustrated, don't feel very appreciated or just downright overworked. My phone and email can never be switched off and the journlists can be grumpy and short tempered. Today my boss is away so my other two colleagues have both phoned in sick with 'slight colds' even though this leaves me alone in the office with a broken arm hindering me.

But then I remind myself I have a brilliant job, I meet lots of interesting people - like Russell Crowe, Desmond Tutu, Paris Hilton and the verterans from Bomber Command. To get to my office I have to walk through the Long Room, and over the years I get to know the cricketers as they come thorough Lord's from being junior players sometimes progressing on to becoming England Captain - like Alastair Cook. I even get to walk across the hallowed turf barefoot when the grass is dewy.

Cricket is my passion and it's great that my job allows me to spend my time immersed in it, then when I have a few days off I am welcomed into matches at other grounds.

It certainly beats putting jam in donuts - which was my first job.

I hate it and it makes me feel like ****. I work long hours and earn the company 6 x my cost.

What do I get for this effort... a 12.5% paycut which almost makes life not worth living.

I have one more potential options to change my career in the pipeline, if that goes belly up I honestly don't know what I'll do.

I feel live-to-work. I see 'er indoors for maybe an hour and a half a day when I'm on lates, cos she goes to work in the morning but I come home at half past 9 and she is falling asleep and so goes to bed by 11. We both griped about this at length last night. They're meant to be changing our rosters so while we'll work an extra hour per shift, we'll have more days off to compensate. No idea when this is coming in.

The end result is that I feel I'm just constantly in work or at home planning that I have to go to bed early so that I can be well rested so I don't crash while on my way in.

Yes, it's the best job I've ever had (and I've had some stinkers) but I'm not the happiest in the world, no.

I work to live, to pay my debts off. Don't really enjoy my job but it has good perks, company car, bonuses sometimes, payrises, fuel paid for, flexible on time off, going home early if I work hard enough.
