Painting covers

As the title says im going to be painting engine casings, but this is where my knowlage runs dry.

What do i need to paint onto ally? as ive seen etching primer being mentioned alot or just some good old black engine paint?

Also is halfords my best option or are there better places to look for this sort of thing?
