Bare with me on this one... I've done some quotes on the SRAD and I'm a bit torn between Fully Comp & TPF&T. I normally always go FC if possible but the excess on most of the policies is £600-£800, with the bike insured at a value of £1600 I'd only get £600 with a voluntary excess of £200.
TPF&T seems, on average, to be around £100 cheaper... Do I save pennies and risk it or pay a bit more to net myself an extra £600 in the unfortunate event of a spill, and that's assuming they don't try and argue the value of the bike... Premium £209.80 £212.59 £213.31 Cover Type TPF&T TPF&T TPF&T Voluntary Excess £300.00 £.00 £.00 Helmet And Leather Cover £20.00 check with insurer check with insurer NCD Protection no no no Premium £314.80 £318.48 £328.33 Cover Type Comprehensive Comprehensive Comprehensive Voluntary Excess £300.00 £250.00 £250.00 Helmet And Leather Cover £20.00 check with insurer £39.95 NCD Protection no no no edit: the list of insurance quotes has fecked up... ![]()

Do you ever ride other peoples' bikes? Fully comp often includes 3rd party cover on any bike that's not yours. TPFT usually doesn't.
I always go FC inc legal protection. I like to have someone on my side when idiot drivers wipe you out then deny everything.

I tend to think comprehensive is not worth it below £2K but I also think insurance is not worth it with a ridiculous excess. The point of insurance is to cover you for major expense, but if you have to fork out £1K before getting anything from the insurance co, they are just failing at providing a proper product. I know it's easy for me in a nice safe post code, old and lots of NCB to rant about it, but it's what I tell my kids to look for as well. Excess on insurance is a major cop out for the insurance co.

For a £1600 bike, I would go TPF&T, but your mileage may vary.
My reasoning is that if you stuff it all by yourself, you are better fixing it up/breaking it yourself rather than get a small payout and have increased premiums for the following 5 years. |

FWIW, my dad had only TPFT for years. It was only relativly recently (in the last 5-6 years) he's gone for fully comp, because he goes abroad on his bike and wants the peice of mind of full cover

Im surprised its that expensive. I personally would go fully comp all the way.
![]() FC £350 with 5 Year protected NCB, Full EU breakdown cover, legal help and all that jazz. Put bike at £3000 value and comes with a £250 excess. Last edited by ThEGr33k; 17-03-10 at 08:12 PM. |

I'm only fully comp because it's so cheap for me (£112) that there is no point going for anything lower, normally I'd be TPFT as for a bike worth 1k tops there isn't much point in it by the time you figure increased premiums and the excesses.

my insurance mo my 750 is about 550 FC with an excess of about 500, bikes worth about 2.3k tpft was 350, so it makes sense to me, ride other bikes and european cover. Excess is always high with me as im still young.

My 2 penneth. For that £100 extra premium, the excess, and the loading the price on your next 5 policies... you will streetfigher the bike or break it for parts and be better off financially.
