Awesome. I'm a big fan of learning to use what you have at hand, providing it's tempered with a lesson in knowing when it's safer to let them have what they want and leave.

Right so now we are FOR arming a class of citizens and training them how to use it.

I give it 3 years till there is a walking stick amnesty (Operation Zimmer anyone) with a ban on them within 5...

Interesting views, just as expected. I have equal arguments for and against, most now mentioned by you fair lot!

Can't help feeling that's I wouldn't want my nan to do these classes though. I'd rather her carry on as she is and stay well out of harms way.

Oh yeah, sounds like a recipe for disaster...

Scenario:

Old dude walking along pavement when young (say 13 yr old) scroate tries to rob them:

OUTCOME 1 - Old dude attempts to hit scroate with stick, misses, falls and breaks his hip...

OUTCOME 2 - Old dude attempts to hit scroate with stick, doesn't make a good job, scroate then grabs stick and clobbers old dude with same...

OUTCOME 3 - Old dude whacks scroate with stick, resulting in serious/ life threatening injury..scroates parents complain, old dude gets into muchos trouble for assault with an offensive weapon...

+1
Sadly, in this day and time.. My thoughts on this as well.
If he didn't nearly beat the life out of said scroate, he's likely to end up on the wrong end of the stick.
If he does...he's likely to end up on the wrong end of the legal charges.

Yep - and the scrote will get legal aid, while the old bloke has to mortgage his house to cover the legal bills.
