Default Some of my bike's history.

The last owner stripped the thread on the sump! The heli-coil gave up the ghost today when I tried to tighten the plug up and fell out. So it looks like I've got to tap an M18 thread in and use a H*nda sump plug

arghhhhhh!

Not original but effective lasting repair,by the way did you use a new compression washer?

Good morning all.

That would be an M14 thread old boy. Not an ideal situation by any means. Have some cheapo oil to hand to use as a wash through. This should help remove some of the chips that will doubtless find their way in, despite gravity.

Cheers.

Mac - yes I did.
I measured the washer and it had an internal diameter of just over 16mm.
I was thinking of just getting a new heli-coil put in, but i think that it has stripped the ally out when it fell out.
Any thoughts?

I doubt that a new helicoil will stay in place if it's stripped it's retaining thread. It sounds like it's already fairly oversize if the washer measures 16mm providing it's a good fit on the old plug threads. You may find there's not much metal left on the sump to get another oversize in.

A couple of years ago I had a bike with a similar problem. Having a Lathe I made a plug with a fine M16 thread on the outside & an M10 thread on the inisde. I loctited the plug into the engine using Kryptonite strength loctite. Then the oil could be drained using the internal 10mm threaded hole, with a standard M10 flanged bolt & Alumunium washer as a drain plug.

Cheers.

Anyone ever thought of putting a 1/4-turn ball valve on there, and never worry about the threads again? Just pop open the valve to drain it, and hope nobody near your bike does the same thing in a parking lot.

Might cause some ground clearance issues... and lockwiring it shut would be a very good idea!
