Default Chain riveting question

Hi all

I bought a new chain and sprocket set recently and mistakenly asked for the chain endless as I don't have a riveting tool and thought it would be easier.

Now I realise that I would have to remove the swing arm, so I'm opting for removing the link and getting a new one from here:

http://www.moto-racing.co.uk/item--T...+RL525APX.html

I'm a bit confused about exactly what I need to rivet this this and there seems to be a big difference in price between the tools available.

£34 for this..

Or upwards of £60 for a whale brand tool, which might not even be able to break the chain.

Any advice on this would be welcome. On thing I am concerned about it overtightening the rivet.

Thanks

Nath

Well you'd need a chain rivet tool to peen the link pins over anyway on the new link you'd be putting in.

Well yes, I'd kinda guessed that much, altho' I have seen several references to people just using a hammer :/

Is it worth spending the extra money, or do you think the cheaper tool would suffice?

Hmm, well, to do the job properly, I'd buy the proper tool.

I wouldn't want my chain flying off whilst riding, so I'd buy the tool.

However, personal choice methinks!

If you're just going to cut the chain using a grinder on the rivets already there, then you only need to sort the new link out once you've fitted it, so if the cheaper tool will do the job, go for that one.

That one for £34 will be fine for that split link you have put up.

Well worth the money IMHO as it will last for years, making every chain replacement a lot easier and saving you the money from doing it yourself

The £34 tool was used in a magazine article this month, Ride magazine I think.

It should do the job fine. But to make life easier for the tool to break the chain then if you can gind the head off the rivet where you're going to break it.

There should be a soft link in your new chain somewhere, just look for a pair of rivets that aren't the same as the rest

Ha he's in the middle of the EAR wasteland, if I was a bit closer I'd pop over.

Here's a map of those EAR members who've posted where they are. Sean C looks like the nearst to you on the map, but I'm sure there's other EAR folk in Cambridge

Yeah yeah, okay, so I live in the middle of no where A big flat no where, I miss the pennines, but you gotta go where the money is.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know there was a map of SVers, altho' I think that's missing a least a few people I know around cambridge (none of whom have a chain tool).

Sean C might have one, send him a PM? I should be heading to Red Lodge, near Mildenhall next Sunday if that's any good? I could bring my chain tool over then?
