I'm still alive.

5 months ago I collapsed at home when I tried to pass a 15mm kidney stone, and have had a plastic pipe (stent) in me from left kidney to bladder ever since. I went into Guy's and St Thomas's Hospital on Tuesday for an operation to remove the stone and the stent. I was under the anaesthetic for three hours while the stone was broken up by laser and removed from my left kidney. After the removal a dye was injected up the pipe into my kidney to check the kidney function and it appears that it won't drain down, so another stent has been fitted temporarily. I went home on Wednesday evening and was bored by 12 noon on Thursday so I went back to work.

In 2 weeks time I have to go for another op to determine what the cause of the malfunctioning kidney is, whether it's because the stent I had was in for 5 months when it was only designed to be in for 4 weeks and has affected the ureter (pipe) - that'll be down to Bedford Hospital being as slack as expected, hence the referal to Guy's - or whether I have a kidney disease caused by infections I suffered because of the stent being in so long.

Either way, Bedford Hospital are to blame for the amount of pain I've been in for so long, and if it is kidney disease I'll be seeing a lawyer who specialises in suing NHS trusts. Kidney disease could effectively affect my long term health and ability to work, so I need to look at securing my future financially. I've already lost one £40K p/a job because of this, and any time I take off from now with kidney problems will be unpaid, especially if I have to stop working altogether.

Actually, I'm sorry if I've been a grumpy old sod for the last 5 months, but it really hasn't all been my fault.

keep your chin up mate hopefully all will work out for you , my step father had full liver and kidney failure and i was his carer for 5 years and i've had a couple of problems but nothin found luckely

Lozzo, I'm really sorry to hear of all your problems and hope you the very best in making a speedy recovery. Kidney disease isn't nice and can be caused by all sorts of things, and the biopsy should at least get to the bottom of that. Some people have a stent in for considerably longer than you did without complication so you shouldn't assume it's been the cause of your problems, and even if it did incite infection that may still have been better for you than not having the stent at all.... Nobody likes the time delays that seem to plague the NHS, least of all the doctors involved who daily see patients with curable conditions deteriorating in front of them, but I suspect the medical advice you receive will be more impartial than the legal advice, given that NHS doctors generally have only your welfare to consider.
