Default Is Desnorkeling the filter Legal?

As above? If you can buy a BMC RS race filter with a great big hole in the top, is it legal to make a similar filter by cutting the snorkel off a standard filter?

Just curious.

The Minitwin regs state:

The air box may not be altered or replaced from that fitted to the homologated motorcycle.

The air filter element must be fitted but may be replaced with an after market item.

The air box inlet rubbers may not be removed or altered.

Carburettors must be the standard units as on the homologated model. Throttle bodies for fuel-injected machines must be as on the homologated model.

Carburettor jets and needles may be replaced. Resizing of the air metering holes in CV carburettors slide control is permitted. No other alterations are permitted to the air intake or carburation system.

Bell mouths may not be added, altered or replaced from those fitted to the homologated motorcycle.

Is the filter classed as the air box inlet rubbers?

Inlet rubbers are the bits which connect the carbs to the airbox.

Ring them, find out.

How is it illegal? Nothing is mentioned about the air filter other than you can replace it. It does not expressly say you can't alter it.

And if you can buy a BMC race RS filter that is desnorkled and that is perfectly legal, why when you desnorkle the original to make it into a BMC Race RC copy, does it become Illegal?

The rest of the air box it does expressly mention along with the inlet rubbers that connect the air box to the carbs. But not the air filter.

All it states is that it must have one

yes illegal, there is a limit to gains possible here anyway. Getting colder air in is possible if it is channelled through a fairing attached moulding. The regs and special notice issued this year was quite clear. No cheating allowed in minitwins even though some do.

Hi Coxxy, I read that in the updated rules. No ram air allowed, but that has nothing to do with the air filter. I know you can't raise the tank, I know you can't alter the air box in any way, I know you can't touch the inlet rubbers.

I'd phone them but the Minitwin site is down.

If its illegal they using a BMC Race RS filter is also illegal.

If the BMC Race RS filter is legal then desnorkling the std filter is legal.
