I had the front replaced, with 70% wear left, some time ago due to it having cracks in all of the treads. Continental only charged me 30% of the new tyre to compensate and I had no trouble with that but I was surprised that it had happened. I commute daily, 20 miles each way on 95% main A-roads, the rest 30mph urban. I don't have any interesting corners to go round and I don't get heavy with the brakes so the tyre doesn't have a hard life.
Has anyone had this happen too? Can anyone suggest a reason for it (either my fault or Conti's)? I'll be calling them this week to see what they have to say this time. Cheers. P.S. The rears have always been fine. |

Yup, same happened to me, ask Sid Squid for proof (as it was he that pointed it out to me, I never even noticed). I ride 5-6 days a week, about a 10-mile commute each way speeds up to 60ish (no nice bends either). I did wonder if it was my lack of attention to tyre pressures, but not sure.
The cracks are all around the edge of the front tyre and getting worse (been there for a couple of months at least). The only reason I still have that tyre on is that I can't afford a new one until the end of this month (I hope). I'm not having them again. |

Mine cracked on the curvy but it didn't seem to affect the performance one bit. Still ragged them everywhere. I ran them at 30 front 33 rear cold.

tbh this puts me off pirelli as I've seen it a few times on pirelli tyres, but the other week I noticed one of the michellins on my cage has done it badly. I'm starting to think it might be some sort of chemical reaction from something they come into contact with? Or possibly bad storage?
Berlin - don't hold me to this but was under the impression you were supposed to change them if they are badly perished.

It doesn't seem to be perishing as the cracks are quite large and there is one in each tread depth. I have maintained tyre pressures and been generally good to them. I haven't had time to call yet but I'll try tomorrow.

As Stu says... Go a different way to work every day! Its not the destination, Its the journey!
I used to have a 16 mile commute on my bike and it NEVER took 16 miles! I'd set off two hours before \i was due to start and get home two hours late every day in the summer. Oh, and I once did the 16 miles in 12 minutes on a YPVS ![]() C Last edited by Berlin; 14-07-10 at 09:02 PM. |
