Default Electrical Surges

Get a call from cat to ask me to go home as the electricity has blown and she cant isolate which ring it is coming from...

first thing I notice is the external light utterly frapped... isolate and disconnect..

turn it back on.. next thing I know pops and bangs and lights going mad...

Run downstairs to see the sky box and tv area covered in a white electrical smoke then a few further big bangs as I leg it back upstairs to turn it all off at the circuit breaker.

Speak with the neighbours.. and yep.. their computer has just gone up in smoke and their sockets have been melting..

EDF apparently have a massive issue in our area, and are on their way, they have let me know I am covered for the damage to the electrical items thank fook...

I now await the ok to go home again and turn it on to find out what is knackered...

adds another item to the list of a truly semi ****e fortnight.

We had a power outage the other night and someone along the road from us heard a bang at 3am and went to investigate and found her DVD player on fire! They reckon it was due to a surge. Lucky she heard it or the whole house would have been up.

That's a clever cat you've got there! All my cat does is lick herself in a rude place when in polite company...

We lost power yesterday during a minor storm.

I thought stuff was generally protected now from power surges with the use of a fuse?

Alledgedly in the paper today it says someone was electrocuted yesterday whilst on the phone due to a lightning strike to a nearby BT pole.

A mate who lived not too far away from you had this happen to him. All the electrical items were frazzled by a power spike.

Any thunderstorms in your area?

Get yourself a surge protection plug, I've got one on all the sockets with the high value electrical stuff on it.

I bame it on todays high winds blowing the wind turbines too fast

Sounds like a sustained event, which a surge protection unit wouldn't cope with.
