A VE (Vehice enquiry) check on the Police National Computer will give the make, model, colour, engine and chassis numbers and date of registration of the vehicle linked to that registration number, plus the current registered keepers name and address. It has a link to the MID (motor insurance database) which will indicate if the vehicle is on their database, and if it is will give details of the policy holder and who is able to drive the vehicle. It will also give the date the MOT (if applicable) expires and there will be a marker if the tax disc is more than three months out of date. In addition to all this the PNC contains any information or action marker linked to the vehicle. All PNC checks leave an audit trail so any officer carrying out a check can be required to justify why they did it, and that does happen on a regular basis.
