Default Uneven chain stretch - how much is OK?

If a chain is 55mm slack at one position and 35mm at another does this mean it's ****ed? I still have room to adjust it but I'm wondering wether i should invest in a new chain

I try to keep it at 40mm slack btw

I would say you adjust it correctly at the tightest part, and if that results in way too much slack in other places its fooked. Also worth looking at the amount of lift you can get on the rear sprocket and the condition of the sprockets.

Check for play within the links themselves by taking the back wheel out.

Clean it, adjust it, replace it.

yeah id give it a good proper clean, its amazing the difference it can make. But granted ive had a few chains that get that annoying tight spot in them, a clean doesnt fix it, but it will get a good few more miles out of it. Scottoilers are the way forward havnt cleaned my chain in over 4000 miles and its still spotless

My chain is 25 mm at tightest spot and 130mm and loosest, its well broken, so much so it 'surges' at low speeds Off for a new one this evening
