British bike to France

Hi,

My Dad lives in France and after coming over for a visit and having ago on my SV he has decided to take up biking again.

He is currently looking at bikes in France although the prices are ridiculas, one bike he is looking at is a; Honda CB750 1995 with 8000 miles on the clock, going for £2.1k. This is an import from the UK and has been fully kitted out as well as registered in France.

Now ... I've said to him for that money, you could get an SV1000 or a newish sv650. Minus petrol/ferries etc ...

The question is, would he have to change the headlamps on the SV to make legal in France and another question, is that good for a honda and my Dad?

PS; How good is it being back on the road!

I hear it is a lot of hassle. 100bhp limit and lots of paperwork. Never done it myself but was looking at the same thing a few years ago.

1. I can't remeber but aren't SV headlight beams flat at the top or do they kick up to the left? But at least it can display kmph. Actually I think they do - would masking tape be legal?
2. Registering a bike in France is not easy AFAIK how long can you ride a foreign bike before you need to register it - bear in mind ins. might not be easy on a foreign bike or UK ins. on a biike ridden in france might be limited to 30 days
3. Your Dad needs to chose the bike he wants not just someone's recommendation.

I have UK pointy in spain. Dip is set by position of bulb not glass so by removing tabs on bulbs u can rotate them to give dip other side. Here bikes only have dip on one side but if necessary its easy to disconnect one.
They have a protectionist tax in spain so to register a bike is complicated and expensive: tax is a government set value reduced by an age factor which for a 4 yr old = 300euro on top of the cost of registration, MOT and road tax. Then my insurance will be upto 10x more expensive but thats the price of great, empty roads and loads of sunshine!
