Default "It is tight", sump bolt :- Don't

So whilst I was out tonight the ZX10 owner across the road has paid a visit, "have I got a bolt".

So popped over, his sump bolt is leaking and looks a bit grollied. No, but I give him a copper washer and he starts to fit the bolt with a huge nasty socket and bar. "It feels a bit tight" he says. I should have screamed stop, but credited him with a bit of nouce.

"It keeps turning" is his next comment. So it took me 5 minutes to get it out, coated in alloy shreds, mirror under and sump threads gone.

So I have told him to get it lifted and helicoiled. He is going to talk to his brother in law in the morning. Thank god I am away on a course.

Question, why are some people so ham fisted?.

Even worse, he is talking about visiting the local breakers for a replacement sump plug.

I got a friend to help me put the topbox mount on my CB500 (I didn't have the tools at the time). Finally got the cussed thing in place as it was a tight fit, you really had to push it to get the thing lined up with the holes in the frame. He tights up the bolt, says "I'm going to give it a final turn!" and shears it off.

Now what? Well, he says, try getting some metal epoxy type stuff and GLUING the bolt back together, at least to get it out. That was a laugh, I can tell you. I rigged something up to hold the thing together for a day so it could set, came back the next day and sure enough the glue was still soft and nothing happened. In the end I just gritted my teeth and got some screw extractors, it came out in two minutes.

General Rule - If its tight/pain to put the bolt in, its not going in right. Take out, try again (after checking thread).

A wire brush and a dab of grease do wonders.

Well, I popped over last night to see how he got on.

They helicoiled it, dripping. Try a bit tighter and the helicoil fails.

So clean and closer inspection reveals a crack in the sump.

He is currently trying to source a replacement sump. At least he has a bolt on/off sump and doesn't have to replace an engine casing.
