As above really are they servicable and would it make any difference?
Do they need taking out to sort and where about are they located, are they easy to get to etc. I have a '99 Curvy btw Also is it possible to break the chain for cleaning, obviously the link will need replacing but how and what would you clean with? Chain has some patches of rust on the wheel side, they will come off but i want to get it all off. |

They're a bit crap as standard, you're best off replacing them with the 2003-4 ones which go straight on. Not too easy to get to but doable with small hands. Cleaning the old gasket off is another matter though!
re. chain cleaning, don't take it off, you can clean it in place, but it's a waste of time if unless it's really bad. They dangle low so are always going to look grubby and a bit rusty (surface rust is the only kind that's okay before some pedantic moron jumps on me). |

My opinion of stock tensioner is far better than when I first started out with these bikes. They do rattle. Failure is very rare.
They are not serviceable. Some people wind them back occasionally and let them ping out, personally I don't see point in this. I think it shuts ticking up because it moves sleeve inside about a bit, which pretty soon moves back to where it was and rattles again. K3 type is less rattly but quite possible for that to fail too. In fact there was a guy on here other week with a tensioner that was completely f***ed. Actually the only one I have seen. Lots of "knackered" tensioners are perfectly fine and just rattling a bit.

When i took out the tensioner it reminded me of the way 'brushes' are engineered on some electric motors. I always wondered if the end bit of the tensioner would wear down and need renewed. I wasnt particularly impressed with the difficulty in taking one off using a spanner/socket. You get that 'oh no' moment just before the thread cracks and it comes loose with the amount of force it takes to get them off.

Overhaul:Throttle body,Injectors,Brakes,Forks. Remove/refit:Exhaust,Radiator,Oil cooler,Throttle,Air filter,Tank. Replace: Oil,Coolant,grease,brake hoses & bleed. |

No, tip of tensioner does not contact anything moving, just presses on back of blade.
