Default Photographers of the Org

Recommend me a camera.

Looking for something compact (that doesn't cost the earth) with a decent amount of mega pixles and battery life that I can get off the shelf (i.e. tonight).

I know naff all about photography except point and shoot, so don't think I need too many features etc.

Ta.

What's your budget?

I keep reading good things about the Canon G12 - Jambo has one so could tell you more about it. It's a bit more than a basic compact but seems really easy to use. Under £400 now. It's got lots of advanced features once you want to progress but the 'I know nowt about photography/I'm a bit drunk and cannot focus on my own' setting works well. And the build quality feels good.

The trouble with some cheap compacts is that by the time they've switched on and got themselves ready to go whatever you wanted to photograph has got bored/run off/died from old age.

I could probably run to that at Under 400, but not the price on the website.

Not sure its something I could just pick up at a currys/comet though is it?

Ideally something that fits into my small tank bag.

It will fit in a small tank bag as it isn't that large.

Dimensions (WxHxD) 112.1 x 76.2 x 48.3 mm Weight Approx. 401 g (including battery/batteries and memory card)

Comet sell it online at £399

Currys the same price

And Jessops

And Amazon

I'm in the market for a new compact to replace and I was looking at the TZ9(£149 at Curry) vs TZ10(£229 at Argos) and apart from GPS and AVCHD Lite recording, they seem to be pretty much identical. I read than Motion JPEG is easier to edit that AVCHD and GPS I'm not sure I really need.

Are there any reasons to get the TZ10 instead? For £80 I could get a decent bag, extra battery and a few SD cards. I'm only interested in retails prices since I want to get it for the weekend so can't wait for internet orders.

Thanks!

Also have a G12 and would say it is overkill if you prefer to keep things on auto. However if you do want to grow with the camera it has excellent image quality.

Tz10. Every time. I have stopped using my Nikon DSLR because of it.

I've got a Lumix LX-5 for those occasions when I don't want to be lugging an SLR around with me.
