Apart from the fact you need to be over 21 to do a direct access. why do people get restricted licenses?
I cannot imagine you would get cheaper insurance for a restricted bike? Costs... hmmm buying a 125 and farting about on that till you pass your test would probably cost more than paying for a DAS course? So why do people do it?

Well for me it was because i was onl 17 (6 years ago) when i did me test so couldn't do the DAS, my mates Dad works for Diablo Suzuki and had an old 125 kicking about in his garage so my mate did a restricted licence just so he could use it to get to and from work as it was cheaper than a DAS and in 2 years if he wants he can upgrade to anything he likes he is 24, he not an avid biker like me i ride all year all weather.

because I could ride a physically bigger bike at 17, than the pokey little 125's, and 4 years was a very long time to wait on a 125 to do a das,
plus, once the test was past at 17, that was it, nothing else i needed to do until I was 21. 125's were expensive to insure too compared with that of the SV |

For me I had no choice. In the Republic of Ireland you are still restricted to 33bhp for 2 years after you pass your test. No way around it

The reason I ask is I am attempting to persuade the daughter to get a license.
What are the pros/cons. of restricted vs full. BTW she is over 21 and drives/owns her own car. Any bike would be sat in my garage during the week or poor weather

I think pros are you get to spend to years on not an overly powerful machine, it is enough to get you out of a tight spot but not so much your gonna kill yourself imo, if she is a car driver then i imagine she has some 'road sense'
Only cons are you can't upgrade for 2 years which if she gets used to 33 horses quick and hungers for more she has to wait till the end of the 2 years. |

No real advantage to restricted if she is over 21, just the test is done on a smaller machine. |

if she learns on a 125 to get the hang of a bike, then when she's ready (1/2 year?) then takes the full test. asuming she doesn't do DAS then she would be restricted to 33bhp. Which is quite a bit after being on a 125... then when she's used to that she can take another mini-test to have the restriction on the liceince removed. just my thought. it makes sense to slowly work up with more powerfull bikes
