I would like to swap the tyres on the front of my car with the back to get more life out of them (I'm not bothered about having to change all 4 together). Is there a specific way they should be changed? They are all directional so as long as I keep them on the same side they should be ok??? Or is there a fundamental safety issue I'm unaware of.....

Same idea as on a bike, just get the rotation arrows right and it's all good, it is a MOT fail to get them wrong though.
Also some car tyres are Asymetric, they are marked inside and outside and although they look like they could be rotational, they're not. Last edited by Stonesie; 23-06-11 at 09:53 PM. |

reading this thread has got me thinking.
If car tyres are directional with the rotation arrow, what about the spare if it is a full size and not one of those tinyy space saver things? Can you only put it on one side of he car? sorry for the slight derail.

all 4 tyres rotate the same way,
just some are patterned left or right. wouldn't matter for a spare for a short time |

The spare is only to get you to safety, you should proceed with caution on the spare.
And front tyres moved to the back is not a problem, although they will probably wear a bit quicker (according to local tyre supplier). Apparently when a tyre starts to wear it continues to wear in the same manner throughout its life, but if fitted to a different place thus starting a new wear pattern it will shorten the tyres life. im not convinced though. i have been swapping them for years without problem. |

Also, make sure everything's still balanced, or it's going to be a REALLY bumpy ride.
