Default Roadworks rant!!!

Just been out on the GSR for a nice 200 mile trip, Bolton - Lancaster - Ingleton - Hawes - Skipton - Bury - Bolton.

Ater taking a right turn at a roundabout in Skipton and proceeding onto the A65 I noticed a sign stating "skid hazard - max speed 20mph", as we got onto the A road it become apparent that the entire road surface was loose. With no way to turn round I continue to proceed at 10-15mph while the whole times stones from other cars and from my own tyres are being slung all over me and the bike. After around 2 miles of total hell we managed to get onto a decent road and pulled over to check for any damage. All I managed to see at the roadside was hundreds of lumps of tar and stones stuck to my bike.

After getting home I have spent over 2 hours basically washing the bike with WD40 to remove hundreds of tar spots and stones, luckily I have managed to escape with no visible signs of bodywork/paint damage however the radiator appears to have taken the most abuse with multiple dents and around 15 broken fins.

Now I understand that bikes will get a few stone chips and a few dents in the radiator over its life but what really annoys me is that my bike is 2 weeks old and the radiator looks like its off a 5 year old bike. Another annoyance is that there is no signs to warn of a "loose surface" or "gravel" and the the small sign they have out now is only really noticeable one you have committed to the roundabout exit.

Rant over.

BTW - I saw a really nice copper coloured SV1000-S (pointy) on the B6255

Its a real pita. I hate this surface repair stuff, its a layer of tar with sprinkles of gravel on which is then left like that. Grrr i join your rant.

I feel your pain, got my Hypermotard back yesterday and was itching for a bimble (it was gone for 2 weeks!)

Went for a blast up my favourite road today to find it had been resurfaced (loose gravel) for several miles with 15mph speed limit. The annoying thing is the old surface was pukka! Gets the bike home via different route to find a stone chip in my lovely gold coloured clutch cover.

Oh well, will have to buy a carbon replacement.

complain. guy who i work with got them to properly relay the road as his sidestreet was the only one which wasn't done properly. This "repair" is dangerous and a waste of time. The council even came round and swept all the excess away. RMS who do the repairs really need to assess their work afterwards because by the looks of it all it does is resurface the road no one drives on and fills drains with crap.

They do that shizzle on all the roads around here, it's a good thing I found my normal route had been done while in the car as opposed to the bike... braking on it had a nice little shimmy.

Yep, same round here. On the rare occasions they do any road maintenance (rather than just digging them up and then patching them with uneven poor quality rubbish that turns into a giant pothole after a few weeks) it's normally to put a thin layer of tar with a pile of loose gravel on top, then leave it to the traffic to squash it in and flick the rest away before eventually coming back and painting lines on it if needed.

I feel your pain, and I mean litterally, I was on the same bit of road yesterday and the coach infront of us was sliding about on it too... Really butt clenching stuff.

After 200 miles how was your butt on the GSR? after a simmilar distance on the SV mine is err, painful and my knees feel like they are on fire so I might be pestering my local dealer for a test ride once the credit card is paid off.

PS Autoglym tar remover

I was pain free afer the 200mile ride and im a big guy aswell (6ft 2" 18stone+), although I would imagine a pillion would be in pain after a 200 mile trip as the pillion seat is tiny
