I had thought that was going to read that Maggie had gone.

I have to say that this whole NotW stuff barely reaches a "bovvered" status with me.

Ill be sad to see maggie croak tbh, last of the politicians with real balls.

I too thought it was going to be about Maggie, thank god it wasn't. We still need her if just to remind the current crop of politicians that they do not need to be bullied by trade unionists, or egotistical european apologists.

There are a few nutters out there who carp on about her and call her nasty names. She was the best thing to happen in Britain since Winston made up for his earlier mistakes.

One thing about Maggie, you may not like what she did, but you have to admire how she did it.

Rubbish !!!

I grew up with Maggie-Hatred, her name is still a swearword in most of that area.

However I did some research, watched an interesting Documentary called "Maggie and the Scots" (or something similar).

It made a few of the decisions made by the Government of the time make sense, but what it REALLY showed up was how out of touch with the electorate in general they were. They completely failed to see the blow-up that the Poll Tax brought in, in fact they thought they were doing everyone a favour.

So no, not really that different to today.

I was in favour of everyone paying their way and still remain with that view. I was single at the time yet paid the same as my next door neighbour with 5 working adults in the house. When the community charge was brought in my payments were reduced by 70%

Today there is my wife and I. I pay, she pays nothing. Unfair. Yes I could ask her to contribute. But If everyone paid to live in their community the demand upon the individual would be far less than it currently is on one person in each household.

What upset people was the idea that they should pay their way after decades of paying nothing and demanding everything. By making all pay, they then should question where and how their money is being spent. Strange how now with proposed cutbacks those who pay nothing make the biggest demands.
