Default England in the severe recession

Went to Mylor today, it's a yacht harbour on the River Fal, just round the corner from Falmouth. The signs of recession and no money were everywhere:

The car park - well full of Range Rovers, Mercs and BMWs. Surprising that most had London plates

I like these two, this dog was very devoted to his stick:

This ship, which has been based at Falmouth for some years, is the RFA Largs Bay.

It was to be scrapped as part of the Government's defence cuts. But it has a happy ending as the Australian government has bought it for a reported £65m. Currently undergoing a refit at Falmouth, it will soon be leaving for Oz where it will be known as the RANS Choules. The ship is now named after Chief Petty Officer Claude Choules, who died in May in Perth, Oz, aged 110 - the last known man who had served in WW1. See I told you it had a happy ending.

I'm glad that you all found this so interesting. I got lots more pix of ships that I can post, seeing as they're so popular

Anyway I'm itching to sail a larger boat than a dinghy so I'm signing up for a RYA Day Skipper course

Just call me Cap'n Ed

Hard times indeed, those "dinghies" are at least 10ft shorter than when I was last loitering in Mylor

Nah I can't stand boats, especially fast ones. No fun at all...

Why not Captain Pugwash, sounds more apt.

Good to see someone can make use of our warships and auxiliaries that we can no longer afford. We should sell the Ark Royal to China, and the Harriers.Im sure they can find a use for them.Did you know HMS Hermes is still in service with the Indian navy, including a full complement of Sea Harriers? She is likely to be the oldest aircraft carrier in operational service on record which shows just how good British built ships were before we let the industry decline.Rant over.

YAY, that's where I grew up. About a mile up the river towards Mylor Bridge. Learned to sail at the local sailing club, got drunk a lot at the yacht club, still sail down there on my Dart 18....I was down there a fortnight ago and we capsized the thing twice in strong winds. The first time was a bit scary as I was entangled in the main sheet and pulled under the hull. Luckily I have been sailing since I was 5 and am sort of used to these things, so a deep breath and got my leg free. Then it took us 7 minutes to get the boat sorted the first time, and only 45seconds the second time (as we had learned what not to do). I love the area, but it has changed massively since the early 80's when I first started sailing there.
