Default Any recent problems with Driving Licence changes?

Hi,

I need to change the address on my licence, which is an old one. I recall there were some problems with these a few years ago, people getting their licence back with the bike rating missed off. And I believe in some cases at least they were offered no solution other than to re-take the test. I assume the problem was that older stuff didn't get correctly transferred onto some computer somewhere.

Anyone heard of these problems recently? I took my test in '77, and the paper licence dates back to '96 which was our last address change.

While we're on the subject, I believe can apply for the change online, do you know if you need to send you old licence back before they issue the new one? Hanging onto the old until I've checked the new one would give some assurance.

Thanks, Tony S

Looks like you can do it online here

https://www.gov.uk/change-address-dr...fore-you-start

Going to guess though that you may need to change from paper to plastic whilst doing the address change

Know before I re-newed my last photo license I asked for all the info under the freedom of information act, cost me a fiver, so I have proof from them should they ever cockup a replacement in future years.

That's a good idea, although it would bug me to have to pay a fiver (or anything) for something they should be getting right anyway.

Renewed mine a year ago.
On 'tweb, could do it if I had a digital passport, although they do say it may not work if photo was substandard.
Mine worked, and received new one within 36 hours, including all class entitlements ( had kept, and still have, old one in case of upcocks )
Well done DVLA - never thought I'd say THAT!

That sounds better. We both renewed our passports recently so I assume they're "digital". I've applied online and although it gives serious warnings about the requirement to send the old licence to them, it doesn't say when it needs to be sent. For the meantime I'm going to assume that I don't need to do so until the new one arrives.

Filled in the form and sent it off ....

http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/foi/makearequest.aspx

I now have a full print out of my driving record from day one up to the date of asking for the info, includes all my driving errors as well as proof of passing tests

They've sorted this problem out now. They've even retroactively re-applied bike classification to some individuals who had in (wrongly) taken away from them in the past*. Which sort of shows that when they said they "had no record of it", they were lying and simply weren't looking hard enough.

*Source: Happened to a colleague and I saw the letter/licence concerned.

Did mine the same way when I moved & got new style for old paper one. It took a bit of time on the web doing it, but very soon it arrived with all entitlements & the photo off my passport. You are supposed to send the old paper one back though.
