At the end of Jan I've got to visit Thame in Oxfordshire and get home on a Friday evening to Doncaster. Typically I'd use the M1 but having had much experience of trying to go north on the M1 on a Friday, it's a nightmare. I reckon I'll be leaving something like 4pm (great). When I was living down there and travelling to Scunny to see the now-missus, I ended up sacking it off altogether and going at 4am on Saturday! So, anyone got any good suggestions for alternative routes that might preserve my sanity?
Many, many, many, many thanks in advance. |

I go up the A34, M40, M42, M1 and generally that's not too bad. The biggest issue is joining the M40 from the A34, but that's not something you'd have to deal with. I leave somewhere between 6pm and 7pm usually (generally closer to 6pm). Obviously if there is an accident some way along the line, you're completely screwed. |

I often travel from Hemel Hempstead to the northeast. I go off the M1 at junc 13 and across to the A1 on the Bedford by-pass. Takes about 20 mins longer in total, and a lot less traffic.

Not really any other easy route to suggest. To be honest.
Only advice I can give is make sure you join after J13 of the M1. Im sure you will. You'll get caught up in traffic aroud the M6 Junction as there is roadworks. If I have to drive in at times and on roads like that I tend to give up, head into lane 1 and sit behind a lorry. They tend to average out the start stoppiness and you spend less time on the clutch. I also have a semi automatic which makes me happier in a traffic jam.

Get yourself back to the M40 and then get off at the A46 to coventry
Follow the signs to the M69 and this will bring you out on the M1 just by Leciester This way you should clear all of the traffic lower down the M1 Also not many people use the M69 as they choose to go on the A34 i used this route when going up to Leeds |

Thanks guys! Will see how I get on. At least it's a work trip so if I get stuck for 20 hours in a queue it's TOIL time...
