When we are useing the laptop we keep loseing the internet connection. If we plug the computer into the router everything is fine? We are only a few feet away from the router any ideas why it does this?

If you are only a few feet away from the router, just keep it plugged in?

Theres 101 reasons (well a couple anyway) including radio interference, too many wifi devices in the area, a neighbour using the same channel, even interference from Microwav ovens.

You could spend ages figuring out which one it is, fix it, then have it go wrong again when some variable out of your control changes something again.

Just switch off wifi and use a cable if you can.

The router is in the hall so it is awkward useing in there. We are a distance from neighbours and only pick up one other connection.

Probably to do with the construction of the walls between the router and the laptop then.

Old house with thick walls would do it, new house with loads of wires/pipes in the way would likeways do it.

Personally I would get a cable run from the hallway to near where the computer sits.

For what its worth, my computer sits less than 20 ft from where my router is and I have run a cable around the room (will get it done properly into the walls/ceiling at some point) rather than run wi-fi.

What sort of signal strength are you getting on the wi-fi when this happens? I assume if you are only a few feet away it is showing full strength? If not, does the problem occur when you are using Wifi in the same room as the router?

What make and model of broadband router do you have?

What operating system do you run on your laptop?

Wi-Fi is pants, If you must use it upgrade your kit to "N".

If routing a cable is not an option, look to using HomePlug networking.

try changing the channel on the wifi router. i had this problem when we bought a new macbook although we had had no previous problems running an older macbook, macbook pro and various other devices connected to the wi-fi and changing the channel resolved it straight away

Some Windows Vista machines have a wi-fi dropout issue too. It's a known fault with a documented fix,
