More buying advice on Suzuki TL 1000? - SV650.org

Eyup there folks, a suzuki tl 1000 has come up for sale from my brothers boss for £1200, its been stood in a garage for a while so just wondering if the price seems reasonable and what would need checking over mainly other than brakes and a good service, Im not sure if its the TLS or TLR but shall be going for a better look at the weekend. Ive heard that they can be a bit of a handfull aswell so would be good to hear some views from anyone who has owned / ridden one.

If it's a good bike for £1200 I'd take the plunge you could try it out and sell it on for a profit if it's in good nick and isn't worn out. They're known as the widow maker, but with self control they're barely going to be unsafe.

*only the tl1000s is known as the widow maker

I'm sure it was just advised minor (ish) suspension mods not a complete mechanical death gamble

Was there any difference between the R + S with regards to engine?

Sounds like a good gamble then, insurance is coming in at 450 ish where as the sv650 is about 230 ish so not too bad on that score, strangely the sv1000 is more to insure than the TL.. I thought the difference between the S and R were some suspention tweaks? Ill have a closer look at the weekend and see what the crack is with the bike and with a bit of luck ill have it this weekend. Was tempted to buy it and give it some TLC (if much is required) and flog it on, they seem to be doing quite well second hand, But id love to run it for a bit though but it will all depend on the costs involved, wouldnt be too bad if i sell the sv in the summer i suppose but ive only been riding a year so dont want to run before i can walk sorta speak but on the other hand its one of my favouritest bikes ever for viewing pleasure, slightly srad esqu'e which is good. We shall see.

Power out puts are lower on the later TL's (from the changes suzuki did to improve them)

Most common is to swap the shock for a conventional unit

The TLR is a much different beast, completely different cams, TBs, all sorts. Revs like a four. Goes bloody well, better than a stock 750 SRAD but I haven't ridden a stock TLS to compare.

The TLS has the trellis frame, the R a beam frame. R is heavier built, much more stable out of the box.

Whichever, the suspension lets them down. Get either and put a decent aftermarket rear shock on and some tweaked showa forks and they're a complete weapon. CAF.

If it's an S and you get it, I have a '97 full power ECU in the celler somewhere.
