I know in this internet era and what not people don't use books as much, but I was wondering if anybody could recommend me a good book in respect to motorcycle mechanics.
Not looking for a Haynes manual/service type thing because they are basically how to's. I'm looking more at learning form scratch, engines, transmission, the whole works, but obviously specific to bikes and not cars. Almost like a general anatomy book for motorcycles that explains the physics behind everything as well. I don't wanna become a mechanic overnight or anything, but would like to increase my basic knowledge, so when the technical terms start flying about I can actually follow. Any suggestions/recommendations would be much appreciated...thaanks! |

Are the basics not pretty much the same for cars and bikes?
You could try VAW Hilliers, Fundamentals of motor vehicle technology? |

there's a haynes build your own little engine kit going around.
Other than that can't you just use Haynes internet advice and playing yourself to learn rather than read a book? |

Just start playing around with small jobs, you can't learn from a book.

Oh yeah well I'm already planning on playing around with some small jobs. Gonna try and bend my rear subrframe back, new rear brake lever, tail tidy, crash bungs, mayb even a handlebar swap if I'm gutsy enough.Got my £100 tool set from Halfords today. It's a beast, didn't think there would be that much in it.
But yeah the book is really just for the theory part of it mainly. When I'm not riding or working on my bike, might as well be reading. |

You could also get yourself a couple of junk motors from the local rubbish tip or wrecking yard to play with.
