Default Petition about Internet Privacy

The Pressure Group 38 Degrees have put together a petition against the proposed Internet Privacy Bill that gives Government Agencies the power to monitor net usage, e-mail and text messages, known in the media as Internet Snooping.

If this gets up your flag pole, why not go and sign it.

URL in case the link does not work for you.

My only problem with 38degrees is, once they've got your email address, they become a little spam-like. They seem to assume that, because you signed a petition about subject A, anything to do with subjects B, C and indeed H, will also earn your sympathy. The irony of them looking at internet privacy....

Phone calls have been monitored since the 80's, your car journeys are tracked and stored, your mobile phone position is tracked and stored, with no real legislation originally put in place to control it. I'd support a bill that laid down just what was legally allowed and clarifies what can be submitted as evidence.

Bout to say Jayne, most of this stuff is already collected. An EU directive from 2008 or 2009 made it so forgot it's name sorry.

Yeah so lets all bend over while they make it legal? This is just the next step for them and it certainly is not currently allowable by law. You need to read the details of what is being proposed.

Some people want to reverse the current tide of our depreciating rights to privacy. The same people who stopped it 2 years ago when it was last proposed.

If you don't want anyone to read your email, get a domain, run your own webserver, use encrypted SMTP and Secure IMAP to transfer the mail from your server and your client. Oh and don't forget to encrypt the drives on your server and PC - just remember that if the cops seize those and you cannot remember the key to decrypt the drives, well that in itself is a 6 year stretch at Her Majesties Pleasure (which may be more time than what you are hiding would get you).
