Yo Yo Yo! And all that jazz.
Anyway, I have, as some of you know, bought a house recently. It has an old Baxi Bermuda back boiler for the gas central heating. It's been checked by a gas safe plumber and all is ok with it. As I have moved into it myself, I don't have the money to replace the heating system right this minute. I have a little question, I have noticed that one of the radiators, the one at the top of the stairs, seems to be on all the time. Even when my thermostat is turned to below 0. I don't have any other form of heating controls, such as a timer. Is this normal? When I turn the stat down, the other radiators don't seem to heat up, it just seems to be the one upstairs. This confuses the blonde one slightly.... ![]() Anyone explain this for me? Ta in advance... |

what setting is the hot water, in some cases, people would get odd rads, like a towel rail put on the hot water curcit on the central heating,
it could be that the prevoius owner did the hall rad for warming reasons. |

It has to be on, its to do with cirulating water from the hot water tank, cant remember why tho been a long time ago. Will get the 2 brain cells to bash together and get back to you. But its a design function of the system and normal.
Its odd you dont have PLC anywhere to set the times on and off in the morning and evenings for heating/hot water. The stat just monitors the air temp while the heating is set to on the PLC. I nope that helps a little ![]() Last edited by robh539; 18-04-12 at 07:58 PM. |

Thanks guys, that makes sense, kinda. just makes my landing very blooming warm! Rob, I think there is no timer due to the fact the heating system is pretty old. I certainly looked and could only find the stat.

yeah it's probobly used as a bypass to stop overheating, so if the hot water is on so is that rad, as long as that is the only one coming on, cos it could be a diverter or zone valve letting water past when the heating is meant to be off, for a bypass usually they would make it the bathroom one. you could shut that one off and open the bathroom one if you would prefer.

its a safety rad to make sure that if you leave the heating on but turn all the other rads off there is still one to allow circultion for the back boiler. if that rad was not there your back boiler could explode.
do not under any circumstances turn that rad off. you will have a timer/zone controller somewhere which should allow CH+HW or just HW |

Yeah as bib says dont turn it off, we can't be certain what type of system it is without seeing it. i did say you would have to open another one though.

You could have a plumber look at it, see about rejigging the piping. Our system was about 30 years old but "fully pumped" configuration so there was no crossover between the heating and hot water. It would cost nothing to get someone to advise and quote you anyway.

I had a hopper fed boiler that needed one heat soak.rad.
It was what the boilers manufacturer stated .
