Default MTB question- Gear selector adjustment

Just after a bit of advice on adjusting the gear selectors on a MTB.

Last time I had a fiddle it went wrong badly. The set up is Shimano Alivio 8 speed rear 3 front.

Thanks in advance

Rear (lift wheel off the floor if poss) - select the smallest rear sprocket, does it shift cleanly to it, if so change up 1 cog.

If it doesn't shift up, then use the adjuster on the mech where the cable goes through, turn it anti clockwise until it shifts up to the sprocket. By undoing the adjuster you're putting the cable under tension., which is how the index shifting works.

If its not shifting cleanly up or down at all, it might be time for new cables

Front - similar process, just put some tension in the cables by using any adjusters fitted, if not undo the cable clamp on the mech and pull the cable tight.

Thats pretty much it, keep going up and down the gears to make sure each one selects smoothly, i have my own way but won't complicate here.
