Default Dropped my sv this morning, now really noisy gear changes

dropped by sv650 k4 this morning on the way to work. No damage to me thankfully, minimal damage to the bike (thanks to crash bungs).

Only damage was to the gear lever which I have replaced, but now when going from neutral to 1st there is a nasty clunk. Before there was no noise at all. I've tried adjusting the clutch at the lever with no success.

When I limped the bike back with no lever there was no clunking.

I did search before posting and have read the clutch adjustment "how to", but I dont know why changing the lever would cause this issue. Before I get out of my depth with the clutch, any ideas.

thanks

Does the clutch drag at all with the bike in gear and the engine running? Does changing between gears on the move produce the same clunk?

thanks mikerj,

I haven't taken the bike out yet, I replaced the lever last night and it was lashing down here. I will take it out today. tbh I was reluctant to ride it in case I was damaging the gear box.

Depending on where the clutch was adjusted at the lever I was somtines getting a clunk in 2nd (whilst stationary), other times going into 1st sounded like a bad gear change on a car when the gears were crunching.

I'm not very mechanical minded, but will give clutch adjustment a go if it's needed. I just dont know why it would be necessary. Is some noise whilst going into 1st to be expected?

Only had the bike 3 weeks and been commuting for . So annoyed I dropped it whilst pretty much stationary.

I adjusted my lever a few weeks back as it clunked, it is better now. Simple to do and bro in law showed me how to set it. It doesn't take much change the tension in the clutch cable and get this clunking you have now. 99% sure adjusting the lever will stop the clunking. Someone with more experience may know more but that's how I stopped mine.

thanks ruddlad, I tried adjusting at the lever, my reasoning was that the clutch was not disengaging enough, therefore I needed to lengthen the cable, i.e. wind out (lengthen) the adjsuter at the lever. It's at the max adjustment so I am assuming that I need to adjust the cable at the other end. Does that sound right?

From the posts I read when looking into mine, it's possible. However I didn't have to adjust it at the other end so cannot help on that score. There are far more experienced guys on here than me that will point you in the right direction. From recollection, selecting neutral is a problem that indicates a cable problem, can you get neutral easy? Quick search on neutral should show the posts I read.

thanks, It managed to adjust it a the lever so it was very smooth, nt noise at all. Went for a short ride (c10 miles) next time I used the bike the clunk was back. Adjusted it again, now when going into first if stationary then there there is a clunk, otherwise its ok, that seems to be as good as I a can get at the lever.

Is is normal to have a clunk (not a gear clashing noise though) when goin into 1st if stationary?

Yes mine has always done it, not sure why but it doesn't cause no damage

It's more noticeable on mine when the chokes on. If you let the bike warm up for a minute then try going into first then you may find its less aggressive. You really should adjust the clutch at the sprocket end as well as the lever though to get it at its best
