I haven't cancelled my insurance policy for my bike, but I've sold the bike.
Q - is it still valid insurance and could I use it to ride another bike? If the answer is 'no', how could I get legal insurance to ride someone else's bike?

No, in short.
I bet your insurance says you are the owner of the vehicle to which the insurance is on, but, you no longer own the vehicle, the insurance isn't valid. |

I thought that was the answer to my first question.
But what is the answer to the second?

Some insurers offer tempory policies, for cars at least so I would have thought that the same would apply to bikes. I have third party cover for bikes via my car policy as well as my Bennetts policy.

Phone your insurance company.
Generally the phrase is something like "you have 3rd party only cover to ride other motorcycles, provided that you are not the owner, or registered keeper of those motorcycles". I'm paraphrasing here. You certainly couldn't ride your bike on your policy as when you insured it you almost certainly stated you were it's registered owner and keeper, which you now aren't. You also couldn't claim for theft on it for the same reason, but to my mind I'd have thought your third party cover would stand. But really the only people that can answer this to a level that has any legal standing are your underwriters. Jambo

Obviously only the underwriters at your insurance company can give you the proper answers, but...
As most policies only cover you TPFT on other bikes, I would just look at temporary policy options OR being added as a named rider on the bike owners policy for the time that you will be using. It. At least that way, you will be fully comp! ![]() |

With regards to riding other bikes, check the insurance of the bike's owner. SOMETIMES they apply TPFT cover (or similar) to any other rider as long as they have permission from the bike's owner. One of my old policies had this clause but my last two didn't so have a look & see!

Put my brother on my fully comp bike insurance for about an extra tenner so might be worth asking your friend messie.
