Golf advice!

Morning Organs!

Recently started playing golf again with a few co-workers who are pretty good but they keep moaning at me to change my clubs as they are not helping my game ie there too short! As I can drive 260yrds straight with my drivers but I keep topping balls and struggling to chip on.

Now I don’t disbelieve them I just cant justify spending a massive amount on new clubs so my options are:

Just buy some and get on with it...
Try to find some second hand...
Get mine lengthened (but is there a point are the clubs good enough vs getting some more) current clubs are maxifly irons and drivers(one Dunlop driver).
Any advice ?

Just because you top the ball doesn't mean the clubs are too short!

You perhaps need to adjust your posture to suit your swing or perhaps vice versa if you like.

Measure your clubs up to other clubs, e.g. 7 iron to another standard 7 iron, to check the lengths.

There is every possibility that yours were shortened for the previous owner... So go to a good golf shop and ask them to measure you up.

I shall measure my clubs tonight and see (not to sound daft do you measure from club to grip ?)

I did ask them to have a look at my swing and stance to which they responded that i am slouching over the ball due to club lenght i am holding the very top of the grip when using irons vs driving.

Its been a while since we played dude so I cant remember your swing, but I'd go with Stu's first point.
You're probably driving them fine because drivers have longer shafts and your natural stance suits this. However you're probably maintaining that stance despite using an iron and so topping the balls. Longer shafts may help on the distance iron shots but it'll cripple your short game as you'll struggle to get your head over the ball for the dainty lofted lay ups.
This comes from playing on the driving range but only playing "how far can I smack it" get your clubs and go to the range but instead try hit it into the nets, or the bouncing boxes, better yet place closest to the flag. I'd definitely say change your stance not your clubs.

You only need a couple of clubs, 7 iron, 4 iron and putter.

Having said that I am crap, and have only played a few times in 6 years.

I just dink it around the course and enjoy the walk with a mate, and very frequently move aside and let other play through instead of holding them up

Check where the ball is within your stance. When you hit your driver the ball is placed at your left heel so you sweep it away. Mid to short irons need to be placed more in the centre of your stance so you hit down on the ball, this uses the loft of the club to get it airborne. If your hitting your irons like a driver you will top it as the club head is sweeping up over the top of the ball. And keep your head down for a fraction of a second after you feel you've hit the ball.

Well I'm in no rush so will give some time at looking at my stance maybe even find a decent range an have a lesson or 2 to mmake sure.

there are 2 things you can do before you go and spend a fortune on new clubs that you may not need.

go to your local course and book a lesson with the pro who will look at your stance, way you hit the ball etc. make sure you take your own clubs and he will be able to tell if it is the clubs or if it is the way you are standing/holding the club

go to a golf shop (not JJb sports or any other multi sports store) one that specialises in golf and get them to measure you up for clubs. take the measurements away and measure your own clubs to see if the ones you have a shorter.

Just take a club to a golf shop, grab another club which is the same number, place your finger on the top of the grip and the toe of the club on the floor, do the same with the other club and you will soon see which is longer of shorter...

Golf lessons are expensive but great, over the years I taught myself and got down to a 9 handicap, I will be having some lessons if I get back in to golf anytime soon.

Playing at Chart Hills on Sunday, anyone who knows golf knows this club, I hope I hit it ok... Haven't played for about 7 months!

To get an idea of length just Google any of the major manufacturers, then look at the spec for the irons. Actually getting measured up now, when your swing will change a lot in the next few months, is a waste of time. However, I would recommend getting your swingspeed checked. It may well be that you have the wrong shaft flex. If that is the case, you might as well get fitted up with some perimeter weighted irons to give yourself the best opportunity to improve.

As for topping the ball coz you're tall, that's just rolox. Typically a driver length is about 45", and a wedge is about 37"... why doesn't everyone top/thin a wedge? Coz you automatically adjust your swing stance for the club in hand.
