I made an appointment and asked for specific information before going house hunting. Find the house we'd like and put a reservation on based on what the bank had told us. Go back to the bank only to be told they'd got it wrong... fine, we'll sort the mortgage out elsewhere.
I put in a request to discuss their error with the branch manager, delaying the purchase meant we'd, potentially, be penalised £250 by the seller and also lose the discount of £15k. But in the interim negotiated with the builder to retain the discount but still lose the £250. The bank manager admits, note ADMITS, the error and agrees its a training issue. She then goes on to say that with the extra desposit we'd got we satisfy the criteria and, "she should know coz she was the branch's mortgage advisor for 6 years." - Wrong. After being turned down by the mortgage people in the branch we go back to the manager and she a) denies admitting the error, b) denies saying its a training issue, c) denies saying the bank will pay the £250, d) denies saying we fit the criteria. And yes you can have the Area Manager's name but no you can't have his contact details. I've only once before called someone a liar when dealing with something at a professional level...its been said to her, and now its in print. "You are a liar." The mortgage will be sourced elsewhere, and we nett a tidy sum each month that very shortly won't be going into the RBS.

Abbey National offered me the world when I first started house hunting, yet when I found a propery the amount they would lend me dropped significantly so I ended up with Nationwide.

I was with Alliance& Leicester, sent my mum in to collect a mortgage application form, filled it in and mum dropped it off. 1 week later there was a letter on the doormat to say my mortgage was approved. Isn't this how the the process should work, you apply, and get yeah/neigh. No faffing about establishing what they may/may not be prepared to lend. You know what you can /cannot afford. Put a decent deposit down and where is the risk?
Closed all accounts with them when they became Santander. The wife was with abbey and had nothing but issues since they became Santander.
