Default New to these parts

Hi there,

Bit of background for those of you who are bothered. I've got my DAS Mod 2 booked for the 22nd August at Enfield and I'm not quite sure if I'm looking forward to it or dreading it. I'm riding a 125cc twist and go at the moment to commute the 12 miles from home to work. If I'm honest, I love it - it's something stupid like 5p a mile according to my fuelly and I absolutely rag it (as much as you can rag a 60mph scoot anyway...) - but I'm ready to graduate to something bigger and, dare I say it, a bit more manlier.

I've got around £1300~ saved and I'm really sold on a pointy SV 650. I've been told it's a great first bike and it's very forgiving. Is this a realistic budget for something that still has life left in it? I've done some cursory research on autotrader and fleabay, but asking prices are pretty varied and I can't seem to pin down an average.

It'd be used pretty much everyday in pretty much every weather short of falling white stuff and biblical storms, so I understand some sort of extended fairing is required to stop the drain hole from filling up with rain water. Given that the weather is typically British all year 'round, is this something that is usually found as standard when buying a second hand SV and, if not, what the hell does it look like so I can check anything I go to buy? And is there anything else in particular I should look out for or any other quirks I should be warned about?

The only other thing I wondered was why insurance quotations go up for having crash bungs installed? I understand it's a post-factory mod, but surely it prevents expensive cosmetic damage?!

Other than that, hello!

Hola!

We had the SV650 09' pointy and it was a brilliant bike.
We sold our bike as part-ex for our GS but we sold it for around 2,800 but the dealership then put it on offer to customers at 3000+ but the bike was near enough in good condition apart from the odd dink and scrape at the back fairing. It was also naked.
For a good looking and decent SV pointy I'd say save up around 3,000 OR buy one a lot cheaper and buy the bits and do it up yourself.
It's a brilliant bike for going on long journeys on, it stays loyal and I don't think it ever broke down on us once! The only thing we had a problem with was the gear leaver sprung back but that was fixed within a second.
We had it for 3 years and we still look back now and think.. should we of sold Suzy?!

And as for the crash bungs, we had them. I don't think it made a HUGE difference on our insurance - infact I don't think we declared it as we had them installed a few month before we got rid of the bike.
But good luck in the search! I hope you find something

Bothered? Right, the first thing you need to do is click the bottom link in my signature box, read the dit and then like it. Secondly, good luck with your mod 2.

Not fairings... fairings do nowt.
What you want is a fender extender on the front mudguard. (google it)

Crash bungs definitely help, don't bother telling insurance about them as they generally consider them a modification and penalise you for them.

£1300 should get you a good un. Don't forget to have some cash left over to give it a good service when you start with it.
