Did this in the Garage a couple of years back, severed the thumbs tendons. Needed a good plastic surgeon to sort it out.

Worst thing I ever did at work was a bit of unofficial firework making.
In the workshop we had a huge magnesium anode off a tanker. We'd been asked to determine whether it could have started a fire. The boss had eventually put a blowtorch on it to show that it wouldn't spontaneously ignite, point proved. Anyhow, me and another of the youngsters (this was ages ago) managed to put this anode on the pillar drill and make a nice pile of fine shavings. We combined these with an oxidiser and piled them up on the brazing hearth. I drew the short straw, heated up a length of welding rod with the oxy-acetylene and touched the white hot end to our magnesium pile. It worked a little better than we expected, and the infrared shining though the gap in the fire bricks flash cooked the skin on the back of my thumb where I was holding the welding rod. It didn't hurt too much at the time (probably killed the nerves too), but for the next few weeks it was ****ing sore while the skin sloughed off. Sorry, no gruesome pictures with this one. Keith. P.S. Should probably have had a hospital visit, but Paul and I would have been looking for a new job if the boss found out what we were doing. Last edited by keith_d; 18-08-12 at 10:22 PM. |
