Hi all, new member here!
Bike isnt charging correctly (too low with h/lights on) Regulator rectifier may be faulty, so had a wee look. Can anyone make sense of what the previous owner has done here on my 98 curvy 650. Looks like he's wired across some crazy earth or something?? Just why!? [IMG] ![]() |

Because earth/frame issues are a common and reoccurring issue on most bikes. I fixed this recently on a 125 by cleaning up the earth connection between battery/frame.
Do you have voltage going between all 3 of the yellow wires, and earth? that tells you if the generator is ok. If so, check your voltage out of the R/R on that red wire there and let me know what that reads. Also check the resistance between the battery earth and the frame and engine. that'll give you a good idea of where the problem is. |

All that is doing is a very inelegant solution to ensure the R/R is earthed.
You have already established a low voltage. meter out the 3 pair feeds from the stator

so that black lead is just an extra earth? Im not that electronically gifted and I've got access to a cheap R/R so I might just rip the lot out and start again!

Cheap or not. Do the 3 pairs first.
takes all of 5 minutes AC voltage. a-b, a-c, b-c. should be about the 70-80v on the AC scale.

Check the earths too. Engine/frame, battery/frame engine/battery.

As above, that additional wire should be good & redundant, as that black lead should feed into the negative lead for the battery / main earth anyway, but if the wiring is suspect check connectivity before snipping that extra connector.
As per Tim's comments, check that you get a decent voltage across all 3 AC phases at 5,000rpm. I often then disconnect the black & red wires from the reg/rec output and check them with the R/R unconnected to the main loom using the handy connector, which you seem not to have. Ho hum. Jambo

Hey folks, thanks for all the tips
So after some hap-hazard learning tonight and at the expense of a 30a fuse and a crappy connector wire to the multimeter, I think I've sorted this. Poked around and took a load of readings, all inconclusive. Swapped over to a new (to me) R/R and problem solved! Nice strong charge through the rev range and with lights on. RIP little red connector lead, gone before your time... |
