Default Watch out for the Hun in the Sun...

And no I don't mean Jayneflakes mates Hans and Grüber

It's getting towards the superfun happy time of year where you go sliding everywhere on the ice and snow while creeping your way through the rush hour traffic in unending darkness and misery.

But first there's this time of year where there's often a low sun to interfere with your vision, and more worryingly if the sun is at your back it will make it very hard for any car driver or lemming to see you approaching.

Bear it in mind when you're riding, if you can see your shadow in front of you then take extra care approaching cars, you need to bear in mind where a car might be going, consider slowing down but more importantly plan an escape route. If it is a pedestrian squinting into the sun consider if they look skinny or if they are rotund enough that hitting them would seriously affect your fuel economy. Fat people are not as soft as they look!

Hi vis and a headlight can make you even less visible from the front with the sun behind you, consider what's needed at the time. Try and think about what sort of target you present to anyone looking and how to make sure you're seen, or indeed not seen but give yourself a way out.

Don't be the one getting knocked off saying "there was nothing I could do", there is always something you can do!

Good post. Never really thought about how visible I would appear with a low sun on my back. Thanks for activating a dormant space in my biking noggin.

I hoped mentioning the science of how a pedestrians dietary habits affects the fuel economy of running them over would have balanced it out

Its a side of YC we've not seen before.

Good advice, I hate it when the sun is that low, especially in my rear view mirrors, or glare coming off dew soaked roads.

Take it easy folks

Nope, its was like a minor YC impersonation but that's about it.

Needed to be more...

"alright feck witts, dont go blaming careless cagers when you lot get pulled out on when you're steaming along with the sun behind you blinding the already partially sighted and common sense impared eeejiits we have on our road. Take a second to think about how remedial you're riding is and give the crappy cager a wide berth whilst doing ur best to ride with a siren or other such attention grabbing devices... like riding with your willy out."

NOW thats a YC post on rider safety.

What the hell? Unprompted, nicely worded, consciencious advice? Must have been hugging too many fluffy kittens.
