Well this is a fun job!
Need some advice. First off, like a total Muppet I turned the motor clockwise by about a revolution. Will this have caused me any problems? I have since seen sense and turned the motor anti clock like it should be a few times to check it, and then I have set the R up in the timing inspection window and checked the rear cylinder. Next problem: my feeler gauges are imperial ![]() So far I have this: Ex L: .006" Ex R: .006" In L: .003" In R: .003" Specs are: Intake: 0.10mm - 0.20mm (0.004" - 0.008") Exhaust: 0.20mm - 0.30mm (0.008" - 0.012") If my readings are right, I'm going to have to do all 4 valves yes? So assuming I have not screwed anything up winding the motor backwards, do I go ahead and strip the motor or would anyone say its marginal enough to just leave it? BTW, its done 33k and this will be the first check on the clearances. |

Yes, you'll have to do the lot - they're all tight.
Imperial gauges aren't a problem; 4 thou = 0.1mm, or at least closely enough to do this job just fine. As long as you turned the motor the right way a couple of turns before checking anything it'll all be fine.

Cheers Sid, this is not looking like a quick and easy job
![]() Quite surprised that shims are nearly £4 a pop as well from wemoto, but may not yet need all 8. Time to check the the front cylinder. |

That's cheap, OE ones are way dearer. As you say, you may not need them all - after you've got them all out, you may well be able to re-use a few.
Also see stuff like this: eBay link. Obviously that's only worthwhile if you need lots, or will keep the bike a long time or are going to do other people's SVs too. There are others like that Hotcams kit, but I can't find any links.

My 2p of advice:
1) your local bike shop may do shim exchanges rather than having to buy new. Chat to the service department and take cash... 2) don't put all your shims and buckets in ice cube trays on the floor and then kick them across the garage. It takes longer when you don't know what you started with (bizarrely this one wasn't me). Jambo Sent from my thingie

Right - can someone shout at me if I have this wrong please?
![]() Looks like I only need 2 shims, and a cam chain tensioner gasket. I ziptied the chain to the cams so I don't need to fix the timing later - seems to have worked. And these look to be the right shims (7.48mm dia) - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Valve-Shim...item337fcb48fe Last edited by markc123; 09-02-13 at 05:11 PM. |

Definitely check it. 100% don't omit checking it. The cams may be correctly spaced apart but the chain may have rolled around the crankshaft end sprocket. Check the timing!
