Default Valve adjustment/cam timings - how difficult?

Morning all,

I have a question about the above, is it very difficult to do?

I am a competent DIY'er and carry out most maintenance on my bike and can't remember the last time I took a bike to a garage but valves are something I have never attempted to tackle as I never normally keep my bike much more than a year. I have a Haynes manual and I think it sounds simple but I don't know why it really daunts me and I am loathed to pay the prices some garages are quoting when I am quite capable really.

Is there anything that can go catastrophically wrong? I gather it it just head covers off and then feeler gauges?

Cheers guys

In the middle of it at the moment, get yourself the Suzuki service manual and have at it. Nothing to go massively wrong unless you screw up the timing, and you can only do this if you have to make adjustments. Be aware that the timing inspection and the crank cover can need a bit of care to undo, use good quality allen keys or sockets.

I took all the plastics, seats, tank and rad off which made access easy, but I needed to do a few other jobs including coolant while i was in there.

Just waiting on shims and a few other parts to put it back together now, had to do all 4 valves in the rear cylinder.

Posted by another orger - you want the 99-02 service manual folder and then the periodic maintenance section. If you need to make adjustments, the cam removal procedures are covered int he general engine section.

TBH - it's like anything, daunting until you've actually done it and then you look back and think, "That was quite easy actually, dunno what all the fuss was about."

Check and re check the timing again using the manual and turn the engine a few times by hand before starting it to make sure it doesn't stick and all will be fine! Turn the engine a few times by hand before you take it apart so you know what you are expecting to feel. Don't forget to take the spark plugs out, much easier to turn.

A little tip, when turning the engine and looking for timing marks don't use a ratchet type socket handle because at certain points in the cycle the engine will spin the ratchet and you will keep missing the timing marks. Also if your oil is a bit black it can be hard to see the timing marks, i found it much easier to drop the oil at the same time.

Its not hard just take it slow and think. And don't drop anything into the crank cases. I used a magnet to lift the buckets out and take out the shims(not out of the crack case just found it easier to lift them off the head)!

This very good advice. To this end, stuff some rags into the camchain tunnel so if/when you fumble a shim it won't disappear into the innards of your motor.

Will I need to take the cams off, I don't think I do unless adjustment is needed, is this right?
