Default Which chain tool?

So i've managed to break my chain breaker/riveting tool.

It managed for 5 years but was dying before this morning.

Can anyone recommend me one? There are 5 bikes in the household, plus friends have a habit of ringing and asking can they come over and fit a new chain, so it will get used.

Thank you

This one

Don't think you can find one at this price on EBAY, but if you go to Demon Tweeks site, they are available at this price.

Mine is on its way out too, and I'm going for one of these as its replacement

I've used one of these a number of times. It works well but can be a bit funny to line up, but gets easier with practice. Though if you want to use it as a breaker, grind the rivet off first, and I'm sure you can get it a lot cheaper than the one in the link that was just a quick search to get the design.

I have used the Whale type once before, I think the Whale was easier but much more expensive. If I were in the market for one (which I should be soon) I don't know which one I'd go for.

Plain or hollow pins?

The Whale tool linked to above does not suit hollow pins.

I've had one like this for many years and countless chains: Linky.

At the risk of asking a silly question; whats the difference between plain and hollow pins, how can I tell which ones I have, and which are more common?

Plain pins are just that, a solid cylinder of metal. Hollow pins have a recess in the end such that the last few millimetres of the pin is a tube.
Plain pins need to be quad staked, which means the end of the pin is squashed into a four sided pyramid - like the other pins of the chain which are riveted at the factory.
Hollow pins are set with a tool like the one I linked to above, which pushes a tapered ended punch into the recess to spread it open.

So which is better? And which tool do I need? You say that the Whale type doesn't work on hollow, do the other ones only work on hollow or just plain? I never knew there was this much variation in chain design.
