Insurance Cat D - sell as is or fix?

hi guys..

I have an sv that has been cat d'd after a low speed accident about 100m from my house. On the request (aka demand) of my wife i am to sell it and buy a car.

At the moment the damage is:

The left rearset
The clutch lever
An indicator
The front fairing has a crack by the headlight
The headlights have been pushed back slightly

As far as i know the rad is fine. Its brand new (2 months old) And as far as I've been able to tell the forks are fine too. I've got it booked for an MOT later this month to get an official damage report.

In your opinions, should I fix and sell it or should I just sell it?

As for the bike, when you say new, how new? As in 2012 reg?

The damage doesn't sound too bad at all. The question is, if you've decided to sell why would you pay to fix it? As its Cat D anyway that will reduce the price anyone is willing to pay. Depending on how much you bought it for I would consider selling it for parts as you're more likely to get a better return (but bear in mind the hassle of selling).

Now if you were going to tell the wife that its either this or she's coming to the football with you every weekend, then I would say you could fix this up no problem.

Sorry i meant the rad was brand new.. The bike is an sk6 with 24k on the clock and relatively new tyres (theyve done about 600 miles since buying in nov).

In that case it all comes down to cost. The rearset, indicator and lever and fairly cheap and accessible. Fairing and headlight will be more tricky depending on what route you take (second hand or repair). If you repair it then it might not look as new and a seller (should) pick that up and price accordingly.

Even if you find a second hand unit, there is always that question of what other potential damage could the bike have suffered. Assuming that the forks and frame aren't damaged then, yes it would be better to repair it. But not if it will cost you more than say £200.

SK6 with 24K on the clock will be selling in the region of £2000-£2600 (depending on condition). As an unrepaired Cat D you're looking at less than that.

What price did you have in mind?

Neither, keep it.

You survived, so why does your wife demand that you sell it?

If you'd had a close call with the grim reaper, I'd understand.

My wife wouldn't demand I get rid of my bike.

The damage is minimal, you could have done that just by dropping it.

Maviczap - I got the guilt trip... I'll get another in a while whens shes calmed down.

In terms of price.. I have no idea. I certainly am not expecting market price for it. Theres a garage at the end of my road so I'm going to get them to inspect it. If theres nothing severe (like bent forks) i'd likely fix it all and sell it for what seems reasonable.. I'd be pretty happy with 1500 nuggets

You know these thing depend on a lot of factors and, most importantly, what someone else is willing to pay. I can find some examples of similar-ish mileage bikes in good condition sold for between 2k and 2.5k. You sold for 2k which is in the ballpark. I don't think the OP's mileage would put me off as long as the service history (and the big one at 16k) is good.
