Default Front sprocket oil leak

So on my way to work this morning I noticed my bike was spewing a rather alarming amount of oil!

Managed to get it back home, did some thorough investigating and found out that it is coming from directly behind the front sprocket.

So, does anyone know what this seal is called? Could it be any number or seals that the oil is leaking from?

Also, when I removed the front sprocket, the nut was finger tight I put no effort into twisting it off at all. Does this bear relevance to why it was leaking oil in thr first place?

He said it was the seal behind the sprocket not the rod seal. Take off the sprocket and the spacer and check if the oil is leaking in the middle or the seal edge & report back.

This sometimes happens when the front sprocket nut is loose.

Clean the area up, including the threads the front sprocket nut its on and rear tyre if any oil got in that. Torque the nut back up to the correct tension, and ensure the tab washer is used to prevent the nut coming off of it gets loose.

Go for a short ride and check if the leak is still there, if so you'll need a new seal, this can be replaced with the sprocket off, but the engine where it is which is a bonus.

But we'll start with tightening the nut up because it's free.

Thanks for the help guys.

I refilled the oil and ran the bike for a few minutes, it's leaking from the edge of the seal.

I will try tightening it all up and see if that fixes it.

Surely just a loose sprocket wouldn't let that much oil out, when it first went it pretty much dumped the whole lot, the back wheel and everything nearby was soaked and took almost 2 litres to refill the bike.

A garage trick to fix this if it still occurs after tightening is to smear engine casing gasket around the edge of the seal. But that would be for minor leaks. Id replace the seal especially if its losing a lot of oil.
