Default Car for Daughter

So, daughter is learning to drive and will need a car shortly because I am fed up being a taxi driver at all hours of the day and night.

I have read the recent Brettus thread and there are some interesting ideas. However, she is 17, so insurance is a key factor. Also money, so perhaps max around the £1000 mark tops. Was thinking of a Ford Ka, simple and cheap anyone any experience? or any other ideas? Brother has a Pug 106 which needs to be sold, so don't want anything that might be considered hand-me-down. Ultimately her call, but want to direct her in the right direction.

Ta Pete

Any small engined, boring hatchback. 1.0 Corsas are fairly cheap on the insurance front compared to other similar sized hatchbacks

Could be a fair swap if she's fit

I bet you want something more reliable than a Corsa so its that Nissan Micra again.

My first car was a VW Lupo and I can't rate it highly enough, I had a bad accident in it and came off FAR better than the other car (Citreon Saxo). Dad steered me away from pug 106s cos they're a bit tin can-ish.
I reckon a Seat Ibiza, VW Polo or Lupo is your best bet, and these days you can get them fairly reasonably priced. Old ford fiestas go for miles and I've heard good things about clios as well.
There's so much choice, no need to pick 106s or saxos

On the insurance front, a friend of mine's son went through that process a couple of years ago. Insurance on a Pug 107 (Gp 1) was very reasonable while he was a learner, but once the test was passed all the quotes were stupid.

In the end the only company of help was Aviva who suggested registering the car in the mother's name, she would then insure it and declare the son as the MAIN DRIVER (this is most important to be legal). The quote was less than half the others. They also will credit him with the full complement of NCB after at least 3 yrs (without claim obviously) when he subsequently insures a car in his own name.

As for car, 107 and clones are still £2k and over, but a Yaris is a much much better car than a Micra (had both) and can be had for your sort of money. My 1.0L Yaris is Gp 2 I think.

I had a 1L corsa b as my first car. Cost just under a grand and sold it for the same a year later when I got a new car. Insurance was very reasonable (around 700/800 i think) but that is a new driver, with no no claims etc.

Worth a look at a few and do a go compare or the like to get an idea of the insurance cost for each.

WTF?! You are younger than me, and yet you can get car insurance for that much? My first car insurance was 3 grand! And you have a brand new bike, i dread to think how much that was to insure..

As for what xcar, ive had a ka and i would avoid them, but maybe i just had a dodgy one bu i had a 8 inch long rusted crack in the chassis/rear axle area...pretty horrid. Aldo compared to my 2nd car a 306, the ka was very uncomfortable seat wise etc, and its was only a 4 seater, not sure about newer ones tho. If you go for a peugeot, the main achilles seems to be the electrics are crap
