Default Insurance renewal date versus second bike arrival...

Hi All,

I think I have a slight dilemma...what would you do?

1) I have a KTM SMT which needs the insurance renewed mid september
2) I am awaiting my second bike to be available, a Rocket III, due mid september
3) My current insurance policy doesn't allow for a second bike
4) I don't want to lose my 3rd year NCB due at the end of this policy mid september

Now if my new bike is available inline with new renewal date then great I can shop around for a multi bike policy to cover both bikes from mid september and it's all gravy

However if it's say available 2 weeks late (highly likely) what options do I have?

I assume because of the new SORN / insdurance laws I can't wait a couple of weeks after my insurance ends on my current policy before starting a new policy to cover both bikes (and walk to work in the interim)?

Will I need to start a bike policy regardless for the SMT only and then cost myself more money 1-2 weeks later to add a second bike to it? Or could I start the insurance on the new bike before I am the registered owner (talking 1-2 weeks before hand, I know the reg it will be)?

If I sorn the SMT for the short term will that cost me more? Tax is from April...

What a pain in the rear this new law is! Why do I feel like the DVLA and insurance companies are a bunch of thieves....

Take out new insurance on the smt and cancel within 14 days when r3 arrives. Then take out new insurance

Personally i would have the bike unisured temporarily if you dont think chance of theft is too high. Ive had a bike sitting in the garage for at least 6 weeks, and a moped sitting in the garage for around 10 weeks both un-insured, and never got any letters, this was within the last 3 months.

If the bike is uninsured, it is meant to be sorned. I think the penalty is £1000. May be worth properly looking into.

Yeah im aware of that. Bike was not sorned, moped possibly by last owner but not me. They write you a warning letter first anyway.

Yeah, I've read through the Sorn stuff and there is a means of sorn'ing via letter so there must be some leeway I would have thought for getting things sorted out...what if you were on holiday whilst your bike insurance ran out etc? Surely you wouldn't get wholloped a £100 penalty for that scenario would you?

The £1000 fine is if things go to court...

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-insurance/uninsured-vehicles

If it's a matter of a couple of weeks will I seriously have to be concerned about insurance on my current bike if off the road but taxed....seriously...? You would hope there is some leeway, a fair notice period to sort it out etc etc?

Personally I would jut let it run. If you get a letter then ask triumph how long it's going to be and take it from there. You will only get a fine if your persist in trying to evade tax / ins

Still a £100 fine is still probably less than those robbing insurance companies will want for admin fees etc with my policy getting adjusted...
