Out a ride this morning all going well when the fuel light came on followed by the red F1 light then the dash went blank (the taco stopped working as well) then the bike engine started to stumble then packed in completely. Now the bike won't start it's as if the battery is dead. Got the bike home by van and have stuck the optimate on it, it's gone straight to full charge, have no got it turning fast enough to start it yet but the dash is back. Any thoughts on what has gone wrong as it all happened so suddenly.

Have now checked that at the battery no charge is being given, have removed the rear seat fairing to look for the regulator rectifier, my problem now is I can't find it. There is nothing on the offside (exhaust side) the only thing I can find is a part bolted to the frame near side opposite to where I expected to find the unit, the thing is it's a 3 wire un finned unit with written on it 70ohmx2 & under that 7N. I have exhausted google trying to (1) find out what this unit is & (2) where the hell my reg/rec is. Really need help on this one or it's to a garage it goes (when I can afford to). Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks

Its been a while but if I remember correctly the RR on a pointy is bolted to the frame, somewhere above the crankcase cover on the brake pedal side.
Indeed it is, I've just found this pic - Its circled Red. The item you pictured is a voltage resistor, I cant specifically remember its purpose. Sorry. Last edited by Owenski; 06-05-14 at 12:59 PM. |

this sounds like classic green connector/ignition barrel fault.
its a nightmare to get at the green connector which is located at the headstock. to get at it requires the removal of the plastic shield just above the radiator which also needs to be unhooked and moved down. the plastic screw/clips are a right nightmare to get off as they are 'one use'. once the shield is removed you will see a bank of connectors, its the green one you want to check for scorching/green furry stuff/burnt out contact. if it turns out that its not the connector than its your ignition barrel contacts. these are the contacts/wipers at the base of the ignition and can become so worn that they cause problems. if it is the ignition the i would suggest you change it for a new one. |

Thanks guys, have located the R/R and removed it (what a job that was) have tested the volts from the alternator and seems good, on testing the R/R it would seem that the diodes are gone as I am getting readings on both polarities. Have just ordered a new R/R and take it from here. The bike has only done 5500 miles and all the connectors are clean and tight. Will let you all know how it goes when I fit the new part which will be the weekend as I am night shift till Saturday morning. Thanks again

OK guys, new R/R arrived today so I jumped out and fitted it however I now have another problem the main 30A fuse has blown. When I plugged the new R/R in there was a crackle so when I turned the key in the ignition the bike was dead I replaced the fuse and it went instantly. I assume there is a short or the connections in the multi plug are wrong, any help would be welcome. Have given up for the day as I have to go to work now but will get back into it hopefully tomorrow or Saturday

Just a quick update as promised, it would appear that the new R/R came wired into the multi plug wrong, I went on to the web site that I purchased it from and enlarged a picture that happened to show the colour of the wires (different from OEM) going into the multi plug and it showed 2 green at top and the one they sent me had a brown and a green, swapped a brown and green round and it appears to be charging again so touch wood it's sorted. A bit disappointed that a R/R has blown within 5000 miles, oh well will away and put the bike back together again.

Is your bike now all ok, after swapping the R/R as this sounds like my issue.

What RR did you go for?
Was it new or off ebay?
