Hello fellow riders,
I've noticed that my curvy is running rich and I have an understanding of how to solve the problem but I don't trust myself to fiddle with it seeing as my bike is my only way of getting around. Seeing as the slightest wrong adjustment could throw it even further off... I have hardly any money so I can't afford to go to a garage to have it done, if anyone with the ability to do it would be willing to help me or knows anyone who could I would really appreciate it! Even if anyone knows a cheap yet good garage that I could use. I could pay you a bit or buy you a beer or something in return. Thanks very much in advance, I really need some help. P.S. I live in Walton near Wakefield but I will travel if someone is kind enough to offer their help. |

It's down on power, there's lots of carbon deposit on the exhaust, the smell of petrol out of the exhaust is very strong, and it coughs and backfires a bit on idle. I spoke to my dad who knows a bit more about bikes than I do and he said that it sounds like it's running rich.
It's an 02 SV650. |

Possibly stuck choke plungers. Known problem on curvies with the manual choke.
Alternatively you may have a stuck float needle, and it's flooding the engine. I'd start with getting the carbs out and checking all is A OK there. |

Are both the exhaust headers getting properly hot?
Symptoms sound very similar to an issue we had on a curvy, simple check, after 30s of tickover the exhaust pipes coming out of the engine should be barely touchable. If one is just warm, there's no spark, the fuel is not burnt properly, the engine is down on power and the exhaust builds up with carbon. |

Stuck choke plungers, dirty air filter, then its the carbs

Thanks very much for your replies guys. I'll check the exhaust heat first seeing as that's a quick and easy one that requires no dismantling.
How do I check the choke plunger? |

When Redmist says " barely touchable ", I wouldn't do it - just spit on it.
