Default Legal advice, DVLA late licensing penalty

Just got a letter from a company called Inter-Credit International Ltd acting on behalf of the DVLA.

They are asking for £80 for failing to register a motorcycle 2 months AFTER i had sold it.

I posted off the V5C with the new keepers details as normal but can not remember if i received a letter from DVLA after that as it was over 2 years ago.
I called this company and told them that i was no longer the registered keeper and they told me "If i didn't receive a letter from the DVLA saying i am no longer the registered keeper then it is my responsability to contact them. In the eyes of the law i am still responsable for registering that vehicle."

The guy bought the bike from ebay at a buy it now price and i have the date, time, email and phone number of the bloke but that is all useless as he paid cash so there is no trail to say he actually bought it and as he was using it as a track bike it's probably in a million pieces by now.

Has anyone had any experience of this sort of thing before?
My stance is i'm not paying a penny to anyone for a bike i haven't owned in over 2 years but without that slip of paper saying i am no longer the registered keeper am i going to be fighting a losing battle?

Cheers
Mark

I done a full receipt signed by both of us but I have no idea where it is.
No matter what happens I am not paying them a penny. If they want to take me to court I will go. I just wanted to know if anyone on here has had this happen or has any knowledge about this scam the DVLA are trying on.
Thanks for the link LPH.

Surely you're either still the registered keeper now or the document went through?

The V5 was sent off to DVLA in Oct 2012 with new owners details.
It was on a SORN at the time.
I have never received a reminder or any corispondance from the DVLA regarding this bike until today.

If you put the reg into the DVLA checker it should tell you if its currently taxed, if it is then they must know who the new keeper is and the only way they can know that is if they got your letter.

Yeah already checked that, showing as not taxed or SORN from 01/01/2013. Track bike anyway so it never would have been taxed but should have had the SORN updated and you do get reminders for that and I never had one.
