Hi
I'm having trouble with my sv650, I've replaced the speedo sensor on the front wheel bit still getting crazy readings from my speedo, most of the time it just thinks it is doing 186mph. Analogue to Digital is a pain! I've disconnected the sensor and the fault is still occuring, what could it be? Its slamming miles on the odo so I can't even turn the ignition ![]() Cheers |

Well there's a couple of ways to go here.
First up if you sign up to Fuelly you're going to pretty much just win the mpg stats for your year... In terms of fixing it the first thing I would do is disconnect the speedo sensor and see if the issue remains, if so I'd trace the wires up to the clocks and see if they are damaged anywhere, and if the insulation has come off it. If the wiring all looks good see if you can put another instrument cluster on to see if the issue is with the clocks of the bike's wiring. Jambo

Is it only reading that speed whilst moving?
Jambo, you'll know more on this but wasn't there a change in the number of pulses from the speedo drive between certain years (4pulses up to 8?). If the speedo were expecting 4 pulses but was receiving 8 (due to a newer speedo drive) would this lead to all speeds shown being twice your actual? Just thinking out loud but worth a consideration... J

Sorted it. Took out a dodgy gearshift indicator the previous owner had installed and cleaned up all the connections. Think it was causing interference of some kind. Thanks for the suggestions anyhow

It's a common problem and not just with Sv's, although in my experience they tend to under read. Just about every bike I ever stopped the rider said their speedo had been only showing 70..............

We should link this thread to every "how can I make my SV faster" thread from now on. Just fit a gear shift indicator! 60mph + on the top speed! Forget 0-100, we can do 0-300km/h in er... zero seconds!
