Exclamation Alternative chain cleaners to aerosols

Hi Guys,

I was thinking about getting some paraffin right up until I saw the price, then I though - 'hey, I've got loads of white spirit!'.

Anybody got any knowledge about the effect of white spirit on x-rings? Seems like a good idea to me as I have loads of the stuff.

Thanks as always.

£10 for 4ltr of paraffin is not bad considering that it can be used again and again. put a kitty tray under the chain when your cleaning it to catch the paraffin then put that paraffin in a jar then let it settle and you can use it again and again.

dont clean your chain too much as you are cleaning the good oil off it and chances are you will wash out the grease in the rollers which is the cause of stiff links. once a year is plenty for chain cleaning.

Oh, OK, I thought I had read that people here were doing it more often than that. Bl**dy chains, I hate 'em. First chain on an everyday bike for 30+ years so I am a real beginner when it comes to looking after them. Last time it was Linklyfe on me mums stove!

Can't help but wonder about white spirit though, that would be saved and settled just the same...

Thanks Bibio. I'll go and squirt some sticky s**t on it then.

I never clean the chain, just oil it.I dont clean the inside of the engine either. Some bits are meant to be oily.

I believe you must clean only when dirt is visible, using wax grabs dirt and you have to clean more often. I use motul C4.

If you get grit stuck to the inside of your engine, you have big problems Biggles!

Hey next time im over i'll pop you up a little bottle i only really do mine in the winter as it gets really grubby and i use chain wax as it tends to last longer. Other than that i just use parrafin on a cloth to keep the sides of the chain clean as i love a shiny chain haha

True, but you change the oil in the engine to clear out grit. The chain changes its own oil constantly as long as you keep applying it.
